Position Summary

The Library Night Supervisor collaborates with personnel across the division, throughout the university, and with external partners to support Ottenheimer Library operations. Reporting to the Library Operations Manager, this position is responsible for supervising and overseeing night/weekend library operations, including facilities, security, collections maintenance, technology support, circulation, and information services. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight and direction of library customer service and technology support for library patrons during evening and weekend hours;

  • Direct Operations staff and student employees during evening and weekend hours;

  • Work and maintains a regular schedule of Monday-Thursday 3:45 pm-12:45 am, and Sunday 3:45 pm-12:45 am with adjustment for exam, interim and holiday hours;

  • Coordinate daily work-flow with Library,

  • Operation Manager to ensure that library staffing needs are met;

  • Interviews, hires, trains and evaluates performance of student employees;

  • Provide basic reference assistance, in-person and online, for multiple disciplines with appropriate referral to librarians as needed;

  • Provide basic to mid-level assistance with technology related hardware such as computers, printers, and scanners and software such as Microsoft Office;

  • Oversee the maintenance of library public copiers, circulation and media equipment, microfilm reader/printers, as well as circulating equipment (e.g., laptops);

  • Monitor building conditions and library security, reporting problems and working with library administration and the university’s facilities and public safety personnel as needed;

  • Respond to patron complaints and appeals, and refers to Library Operations Manager as appropriate;

  • Build partnerships and relationships among Collections and Archives units, as well as with others in the university community;

  • Participate in staff development training;

  • Work nights and weekends as needed;

  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of multiple units of the library and other library-related organizations;

  • Knowledge of library services and specialized areas of library operations and procedures, including library technologies and circulation services;

  • Knowledge of supervisory and management principles and techniques;

  • Knowledge of specialized library services, systems and coordination;

  • Ability to plan and organize work activities of subordinate employees;

  • Ability to utilize library computer software and applications;

  • Knowledge of library technologies and circulation services;

  • Demonstrated flexibility and reliability in performance of job duties;

  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills;

  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, librarians, and others;

  • Commitment and ability to work effectively with diverse populations in a collegian environment.

Required Education and/or Experience

The formal education equivalent of an associate’s degree in office administration, business management, business administration; plus three years of experience in library services, including one year in a supervisory or leadership capacity. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS.
